CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) –

The concrete started pouring Tuesday as contractors began building the new Cosmopolitan high rise at the site of the old Lichtenstein building on Chaparral Street.

It is a milestone for the $28 million high rise and retail complex planned for the block located at Chaparral and William streets.

The largest single block of concrete for the building was poured by an Austin contractor Tuesday afternoon. It will be the northern base of the new high rise and almost 600 separate pilings for the six-story structure will start being poured next week.

The high rise is planned for opening next year.

“For the next four months, it’ll be foundations,” said Robert Howe of Realtex Development. “Basically, we’ve got a two-story parking garage to build here. Within four months, that’ll be wrapping up. We’ll start wood framing. There’s four stories of that above.”

The high rise will feature 165 apartments with 3,800 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Howe said almost 40 different contractors, including builders and architects, will have been employed by the time the new Cosmopolitan is finished.
