Corpus Christi Mayor Nelda Martinez got her hands dirty Monday helping to pour concrete for the new Cosmopolitan high rise going up at the site of the old Lichtenstein building on Chaparral Street.
Crews began pouring concrete for the structure Tuesday, March 11, starting with the northern base of the high rise, and then pouring concrete for over 600 separate pilings for the six-story structure a week later.
“It’s an honor to be here,” Martinez said. “It’s an honor to have this experience, and I just think Corpus Christi is on an upward trajectory.”
Those building the complex hope it will be the crown jewel of downtown Corpus Christi once complete.
“The Nueces Street Lofts are full. The Bay Vista Apartments, they’re full. They have about a six-month waiting list, so there is a lot of demand for this type of housing downtown,” said Rick Deyoe, who is working on the Cosmopolitan construction project. “Along with all the other improvements the City’s been making here downtown, the revitalization effort continues.”
The high rise is planned for opening next year, and will feature 165 luxury apartments with 3,800 square feet of ground-floor retail space.
